Mac Arts Building

what's going on

We're delighted to announce that mac closed the doors at its Cannon Hill Park centre on 6th April - so that work could begin on the £14.8million mac and sampad Building Project that will see a newly refurbished, and much improved, arts centre re-open in late 2009!

Jointly funded by Arts Council England, Birmingham City Council and a mac and sampad fundraising campaign, the development will dramatically improve mac's ability to offer exciting events and activities as well as improving physical access.

A purpose designed gallery, a first for mac, will provide opportunities to maximise the commissioning of work by leading national and international visual artists, craft makers and performance artists. The current theatre will be completely stripped out allowing the team to replace the antiquated seating, lighting and sound systems and also have new, retractable - and comfortable! - seating.  A brand new performing arts studio will be equipped for rehearsal, theatre, dance making and performance with seating for almost 150 people and there will be a significant increase in studio space including a dedicated media studio and new education suite.

The new mac will secure the future of mac and sampad for the next generation and ensure that mac will be back; bigger, bolder and even better.

The good news is that, thanks to all the generous support from funders and supporters like you, we have already secured over 95% of the total funding for the whole Project - an incredible achievement.

Through this website, you will be able to keep up to date with all of the developments regarding the building project as they happen, and as we move towards re-opening, here is where you will find details of our 'curtain raising ' events and our exciting launch season.  So pop back regularly for the latest updates - or join our emailing list to get regular bulletins about mac and occasional special offers for interesting arts events elsewhere.
